Q. How does Alfie fit "educationally"?

A. Alfie is designed to provide formative analysis about learners. Assessing the learners regularly and in small amounts will provide accurate information about their progress. This information can be used to determine their strengths and weaknesses and indicate the next stage in personalising their learning.

Q. Can I use this for mock exams?

A. Although Alfie is designed for formative analysis, it can be used to set tests and the indicative results used for more summative purposes.

Q. Digital assessments are just multiple-choice aren't they?

A. Not in Alfie. There are numerous question types including drag and drop, type the answer, sentence completion, add items, rotate items, draw items and of course multiple-choice.

Q. Can I edit the questions?

A. No. QCA ensure questions are carefully authored by experts, who are contracted by QCA to create the National curriculum tests. All such questions are also mapped to the Programmes of Study objectives and contain accurate national scoring data, so editing could destroy their validity for the in-depth reports.

Q. How does Alfie calculate learner feedback?

A. Questions are mapped to the curriculum. If the learner scores the majority of questions within the same curricular topic correct, then they receive a 'can do' statement relevant to it.

Q. How does Alfie calculate teacher feedback?

A. Questions are mapped to the curriculum. Questions also contain the national score data from when the questions were originally undertaken. If the learner scores equal to or above the national average within the same curricular topic, then they are considered to have a 'strength'.

Technical

Q. Do I need to install Alfie on all computers for my learners?

A. No. Alfie assessments are undertaken by learners via an internet browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari.

Q. Can I install Alfie on my school and home computer?

A. Yes. Login to both using the same account details and your data will remain synchronised.

Q. Do I need to any other software to run Alfie assessments?

A. Your internet browser will need Flash Player v7 or above.

Q. Do I need to any other software to run Alfie?

A. You will also need a program to view PDFs, normally you would have Adobe Reader installed on your computer to do this.

Q. Where are the PDFs reports stored?

A. They are always saved in My Documents.

Q. What's the hardware specification?

A. If your computer can run Windows XP, Windows Vista or Macintosh OS X then it's capable of running an Alfie assessment.

Q. Is the price a one-off or annual?

A. Annual because we have to pay the QCA an annual license for the use of their questions and we have to host the online service.

Q. Can I use ELCs to buy Alfie?

A. Yes.

Q. Can I demo the software before I buy?

A. Yes, go to the website and either try an assessment or download the software to create your own.
